The Right Way to Tune a Ukulele

Ukulele is a four stringed musical instrument, smaller than a guitar, that originated in Hawaii. The ukulele is strummed like a guitar with top to bottom tuning. It has four classic types called the soprano, the concert, also called alto, the tenor, and the baritone.

The ukulele beginners usually start with the soprano type since it is not so costly and is also easy to play, while the experienced ones who know how to play a guitar generally play baritone type. Baritone ukuleles are generally used by experts and are very expensive compared to the other ukuleles. Ukuleles in Singapore which are made of low quality wood are generally low in cost while some other ukuleles which are made of high quality of wood are costlier. The classic shape of the ukulele is similar to a guitar, but some imaginative minds have created it in various shapes like oval, triangle, pineapple, boat, etc.

The standard tuning which is used in soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles is known as C-tuning which is tuned to g’c’e’a while the baritone type of ukuleles is tunes to d’g’b’e which flows from low to high. Another common tuning used in sopranos and concerts is D-tuning which is tuned as a’d’f#’b’. This tuning will make the pitch a little higher than that of the C-tuning. D-tuning will make the smaller ukuleles sound sweeter.

For a beginner ukulele player, tuning the ukulele can be a difficult task to do but practicing more of it makes it quite easier. The music which we hear out of a ukulele is based on its tuning, so the better the tuning, better will be the sound produced. Sometimes tuning a ukulele can prove out to be fun and can help the child get involved in the music. Some steps which can be followed for proper tuning of your ukulele include:

  • For tuning the ukulele you have to use an instrument which acts as a reference point and a piano or a guitar serves this purpose.
  • Press the lower G on your ukulele and rotate the button corresponding to that until you are able to match your ukuleles tone with the reference tone
  • In the same manner, also tune the other three strings. Keep playing the reference tone till all your strings get matched with it.
  • Now press the fifth button of the low G string and shift from the G string to the C string which will make a match. If they do not match rotate the tuning button of the C string until they get matched.
  • Now E string is tested by pressing down it to the C string till they match.
  • Verification for the A string can be done by playing the E string at the fifth fret. Adjust the A string as needed until you get it sounding like the E string at fifth fret.

Tuning should be done carefully and delicately to avoid damage to your ukulele. If it is not possible for you to tune it in the beginning then you can take the help of some experienced person.

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / Bernstein, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

After more than three decades, this remains the Lied of choice if you prefer Mahler’s sanctioned baritone alternative in the alto songs. Bernstein’s the hero of this intense, powerful reading. The Vienna orchestra, once led by Mahler himself, plays it to the hilt with expressive wind solos, deep, warm strings, and a searing response to Bernstein’s (and Mahler’s) emotional demands. It’s hard to find a version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte that’s as well sung as this 2003 Covent Garden production. Led by the eminent Mozartian, Sir Colin Davis, orchestra and singers present a warm, often intense vision of the opera, not as the fairy tale it’s often taken for, but as a human drama of the passage from misguided beliefs to mature knowledge of self. Diana Da…
