They thought about making their own things when the contract was coming to an end. The company was named Nike simply because Nike is Greek for the Greek Goddess of victory.

This one may actually not come into peoples mind unless you are living inside America but Target is a massive company and has been around for a long time. it is actually argued that Target was started way back in 1902 by George Dayton even though the name Target didnt come into use until 1962. Although the logo steered away from the original logo which was of course the bullseye, it has stayed close to it.
