A Look At Music Composition Software

Try to imagine writing an entire orchestra score in just a matter of minutes, and about the only way you could conceive of it being possible was if you had music composition software. Instead, you quickly push a few buttons to assign instruments to sections and pick a rhythm, add the notes and your done with the work.

After you’re done, you starting thinking about one of the parts and wonder what would happen if you changed the key signature for just a short part of the performance. It’s easy to reload the file and start pushing some buttons, and with a mouse click you hear the results. No rubber trees gave up their spirits for an erasure to make those changes.

Just because there are other songs that make a change in the timing then back again, doesn’t mean it’s an old tired act. New songs are being done that could have lent themselves to an interesting change from one time signature to another.

Creativity doesn’t know a schedule, and it suddenly appears with an idea about changing a whole section to a different type of note. With the advent of computer programming it is possible to place a couple of marks and then change that long rift to staccato. In seconds you hear the results.

The string section of any orchestra can add magical charms to a finished work, and shifting those violins to an octave higher could be done without having to use an erasure. Maybe a few measures of counter-point would be exciting to hear in trumpet section. It can easily be done with computer technology.

Working out four part harmony can be automated for immediate results, then use your mouse to click a few spots and make some changes that are unique. The world of electronics technology made it possible to write programs that make life easier, and you might enjoy having the features of music composition software.

Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it’s the music that’s the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster “Marian the Librarian,” whose love for Preston’s cha…
