Amazon First Out Of The Gate With Cloud Player Music Provider
Now smartphone users can listen to a virtually unlimited supply of their own music using Amazon Cloud Player. Users can fill up to five megabytes of storage free, and Amazon throws in other sweeteners that could make it an attractive option to iTunes. While Google and Apple negotiate with record labels for the license to offer cloud music services, Amazon has taken the leap without such clearance and others in the game are waiting to see if Amazon gets away with it. The way to use Amazon Cloud Player
Users are able to listen to uploaded music no matter where they are without copying or synching with the Amazon Cloud Player. You don’t have to store a ton of music with the Amazon Cloud Player. You are able to listen to it whenever you want though. The Amazon Cloud Player has a free uploaded that lets users send MP3 and AAC files from a Mac or PC to an online music library. You can’t upload any WAV files, ring tones, audio books or copy-protected songs. Just like an uploaded file, the music streams at 256 kilobit quality. You can use the first five megabytes; which is enough to store 1,200 MP3 songs on Amazon. Users who buy an album from Amazon get storage bumped up to 20 megabytes for a year. Songs bought from Amazon once a Cloud Player account is opened do not count against the storage limit. If you go over the megabyte limit, it costs $1 per megabyte per year. It is relatively cheap.
Worst part of Cloud Player
Analysts praised the elegance and ease of use offered by Amazon Cloud Player. There is the idea of security though. Is it secure?. This is what the Amazon Cloud license agreement says: “You give us the right to access, retain, use and disclose your account information and your files.” Plus: “We do not guarantee that your files will not be subject to misappropriation, loss or damage and we will not be liable if they are. You’re responsible for maintaining appropriate security, protection and backup of your files.” The release of the Amazon Cloud Player is at bad timing. Unlimited data plans are starting to be stopped at most wireless carrier companies. Having all the music only accessible on the internet will make it hard for individuals to avoid hitting the limit. It could be nearly impossible. Listening to music from the cloud will be best done in Wi-Fi hot spots. Without Wi-Fi, users can have to use iPods. This could be the only answer to the problem.
Google and Apple to follow
Amazon Cloud Player has music labels peeved. While Apple and Google have been negotiating license agreements with record labels for their cloud music services, Amazon forged ahead. Music labels believe cloud music services must be licensed, but Amazon said cloud storage, because it functions exactly like an external hard drive, doesn’t require a license. Some analysts have said that Apple and Google are happy to let Amazon take the risk of setting a legal precedent that eliminates the need for licensing cloud music services. The idea that Apple and Google want to incorporate is that individuals will not have to own music if they pay for a subscription in the cloud music provider. Their services will be released later this year, many expect.
