my daughter is starting violin lessons at school and i was thinking about buying her one instead of renting.?
I am seeing some inexpensive ones on ebay, but i don’t want to get her a piece of junk. Does anyone know anything about rothenburg violins? are they a good quality? She is a beginner, age 9.
Anything that costs you less than $250 is going to be a piece of junk (and many that cost more as well) because that’s about the minimum it costs to make a decent quality violin and set it up correctly. The ones you’re seeing on eBay may as well be made out of cardboard – cheap construction, cheap strings, ill-fitting pegs that won’t stay in place (so the violin keeps going out of tune) and they sound horrible. One of those will just serve to frustrate your daughter and make her less willing to practice. Not to mention she’s probably not ready for a full-size violin yet, so you’d have to buy another one in few years anyway if she sticks with it, and re-selling violins smaller than full-size never makes much money. You’ll lose most of your investment.
Either rent from a local store or a good online store (I got my violin from http://www.stringworks.com , they also rent and they’re fantastic). Don’t buy one until (a) she’s ready for a full-size, (b) she’s sure she wants to stick with it, (c) you can afford a good student violin at $250 or more, and (d) you know what you’re buying! Would you buy a car without ever having driven one? Same with a violin – there are many lemons out there. Know what you’re looking for, how it should sound, and how it should play before buying, and never buy a violin without playing it first.
