How To Play Guitar By Ear
While most people believe only great artists can learn how to play guitar by ear, in fact any determined student can. Nothing beats jamming by ear to your music collection: you can concentrate on having fun instead of remembering tablature or music sheets. Anyone interested in learning this skill will learn a lot from these simple steps.
Practice on the piano keyboard
The layout of the keyboard, designed for accessibility, is far more suited for novices to practice with than a guitar. The keys are easy to see whereas the guitar was designed as a portable instrument, making it more complex. Advanced musicians aside, students should learn by taking advantage of the piano.
Develop the necessary skills
Learn to listen attentively to a piece before you attempt to sing it. Learn to listen to your emotional responses to the different parts of music. After listening, sing along. The more you practice the more you will hit the correct notes. Like an infant learning to speak, you’ll get there if you try. To help your fingers find the desired notes, learn at least one major scale pattern
Find a song in C major
Every white key on the piano will fit into a song in C major, making it the perfect major to begin with. Once you choose your song, find the first note and discover the rest by listening to see if they are lower or higher than the last. Do not be discouraged, this exercise is very simple and you will feel very gratified after discovering your first song.
Play the melody on guitar
Next you must focus on learning to play a major scale with ease. After you have accomplished this, play your song in C major by finding the position of the first three notes from tablature or music sheets. Then listen attentively to the song again and sing with it. After you are done play the first three notes and try to play the fourth by figuring out if it is lower or higher relative to the preceding note. The major scale you learned will be a helpful aid. Remember not to dwell on these instructions, they may seem complicated, but you will find this exercise very simple.
Discover new patterns as your knowledge of scales and majors progresses
The most important thing to remember when learning to play by ear is not to be dependent on finger positioning. You can do this by remembering the positions of notes relative to scales, instead of the fretboard. That way you learn to differentiate between sounds and do not count on instructions to play a song. Take the time to learn all the CAGED positions and do not stop pushing yourself to experiment.
There are many benefits to learning to play guitar by ear, and you have the comfort of knowing that while it may be difficult to pinpoint the location of a note at first, your accuracy will improve along with your ear for music. Surprise yourself by mastering this respected ability and you might find your confidence spills into other aspects of your life.
